GSU Develops New Institute To Turn Creativity Into Careers

Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced a new initiative to train students in Georgia’s university system for working in the film industry.

Georgia State University, however, has already begun preparing students for the changing world of media. It’s developing programs of study under its new Creative Media Industries Institute.

The university is offering two new programs of study this upcoming fall – one in media entrepreneurship and the other in game design and development.

Professor David Cheshier is the former chair of Georgia State’s massive communications department, but he now heads the Creative Media Industries Institute.

“We want to train students so that they can not only develop creative passions but learn how to build careers out of those passions,” he said.

The university received a $22.8 million grant from the Woodruff Foundation to renovate a building for the Institute. It is set to open in the fall of 2016.

The building will house a media center for students, complete with production studio space, an entrepreneurship center and research laboratories.

Cheshier discussed the Creative Media Industries Institute with Lois Reitzes on “City Lights.”
