The new leader of Georgia’s largest school district, says in-person class instruction is the most effective way to teach and learn, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a challenging environment.

Dr. Calvin J. Watts, who was named superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools in late July, was a guest on Friday’s edition of “Closer Look.”

He talked with show host Rose Scott about several topics, including his Look, Listen and Learn Tour and the district’s back-to-school plan.

Watts also discussed how the district is working to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at its schools by requiring masks and following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

“Covid and the pandemic is not simply just impacting our students, not simply impacting our families, it’s impacting our staff,” Watts explained.
