In the quieter post-Oscar movie season, we are about to ramp up for late spring and summer blockbusters.

WABE music contributor Dr. Scott Stewart sat down with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to look at some of the music that is soaring with some of these superheroes, along with some dragons.

He began by highlighting one of the most anticipated movies of this season: “Avengers: Endgame,” which opens this weekend. It’s predicted to be the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history.

At the top of his list was composer John Powell and his music for the final movie in the series “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Another composer Stewart has on his music radar is Brian Tyler. He established his reputation for high-energy action scores like: “Fast and Furious,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and “Iron Man.” Brian is averaging at least one movie soundtrack per month this year so far. He recently scored the romantic comedy “What Men Want” that was out earlier this year.

“Captain Marvel” has accrued more than $1 billion worldwide since its released in late February. Its the first in the Marvel Universe to have both a female director, Anna Boden, and a female main character. The composer, Pinar Toprak is a Turkish musician and one of the first female composers to write a superhero music score since the early 1990’s.

“Pinar Toprak has provided an epic soundtrack for this film, along with some nostalgic 1990s music,” Stewart said. “I’m a big fan of the main theme she has developed for Captain Marvel.”

Stewart also touched on some Netflix specials.

“The Dragon Prince” was released September 2018 and the second season just came out in February. The TV composer is a young German musician named Frederik Wiedman. He has been active in feature films, animated films, and television.
