The 52nd celebration of Kwanzaa begins Wednesday and runs through Jan. 1.

The holiday encourages African-Americans to pay homage to their African heritage. Each day of Kwanzaa highlights one of seven core principles known in Swahili as Nguzo Saba.

In order to commemorate Kwanzaa in Atlanta, the APEX Museum is putting on its annual Kwanzaa celebration at 6 p.m. Dec. 31.

“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes sat down with Atlanta poet and artist Kenneth Zakee to talk more about the history behind the holiday.

The Seven Core Principles of Kwanzaa:

  1. Umoja (unity)
  2. Kujichagulia (self-determination)
  3. Ujima (collective work responsibility)
  4. Ujamaa (cooperative economics)
  5. Nia (purpose)
  6. Kuumba (creativity)
  7. Imani (faith)
