Horizons Atlanta Offers Virtual Summer Camp For Underserved Families

Horizons Atlanta is a year-round program with a signature six-week summer program that helps mitigate the summer learning loss, also known as “the summer slide.”
They provide low-income students with educational learning, field trips, swimming lessons, social skills and much more. All Horizons’ scholars (students) come from public schools who are free-or-reduced-lunch qualified and are in need of academic support.
The six-week summer program takes place at a local university or college and focuses primarily on literacy and STEAM. Plus, scholars don’t have to pay any tuition fees.
Alex Wan, executive director of Horizons Atlanta, spoke with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes via Zoom about this year’s virtual summer camp.
“The fact that we can provide them that experience over the summer and the fact that they respond and really enjoy it, is the most rewarding thing of the work we do,” said Wan.
