Last night, the city council there was deadlocked in a two-to-two vote on the proposal.

But after a special election in June, when a fifth council member is chosen, the matter will be brought up again.

“This is more of a message that I think the city is trying to send that we don’t need to spend resources arresting people, prosecuting people and putting people in jail for a misdemeanor of marijuana amount,” WABE legal analyst Page Pate said.

So far, only the city of Clarkston has eased penalties for marijuana possession.

“The more cities that do this, the more recognition I think there will be among other municipalities and law enforcement agencies that this is not the type of conduct we need to be focusing on,” Pate said.

The city of Atlanta is considering a similar ordinance.
