Inside Georgia Lawmakers’ New Push For Regional Public Transit
Georgia lawmakers are trying yet again to pass a regional transit bill to relieve metro Atlanta’s chronic traffic problems.
The bill, introduced Tuesday, would create a governing body to handle transit planning, levy new taxes at Atlanta’s airport and allow counties in the region to create their own special purpose sales taxes for transit.
The legislation is sponsored by Republican state Rep. Kevin Tanner, but it has support on both sides of the aisle.
Democrat Calvin Smyre, the longest serving member of the state House, is also behind the bill. He joined Denis O’Hayer on “Morning Edition” to talk about the legislation.
