Jacques Martial to Perform at Rialto

Jacques Martial, known in France as an actor and leader of the arts, visits Atlanta for two special – and free – events.

On October 24, Martial presents his one-man stage adaptation of “Notebook of a Return to the Native Land.”

On the morning of October 25, Martial will give a public lecture about the links between culture and place titled “La Villette: Culture and Urban Territory.”

Martial will talk about the plan he pitched – and is now carrying out – as President of the Parc de la Villette in Paris, one of the best funded cultural institutions in France.

While in the past local residents, many of whom are from North Africa, used the park for family leisure and play, very few entered the major cultural facilities which are integral to the park.

Martial came into the Parc with an express policy for inclusion, both for those local residents and the arts and artists of France.

WABE’s Lois Reitzes sat down with Professor Pearl McHaney of Georgia State University to discuss these events, and what Atlantans can learn from Martial.
