Kemp Fires Back at Critics: Eligible Voters Have Been Processed

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp Thursday shot back at critics who accused his office of failing to register thousands of voters. Last week, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights sued Kemp’s office and five Georgia counties over 55,000 ‘missing’ voter registration forms. Kemp called the lawsuit frivolous. He said most of the registrations have been processed, but said elections officials can’t approve incomplete or inaccurate forms.

“How can we register a voter when the only information provided is a birth year of 1958?” Kemp said. “How is Johnny B. Cool supposed to be registered when the only information given is his city of Yo Town?’”

The New Georgia Project, a group formed by Democratic House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, submitted the registrations. Kemp, a Republican, asked the group, along with Congressman John Lewis and Ebenezer Pastor Raphael Warnock, to apologize for accusations of voter suppression.

Kemp said about 40,000 of the submitted forms have been processed. Approximately 10,000 more are pending, he said.

The New Georgia Project has not yet responded to WABE’s request for comment.
