The “Duchess of Cabbagetown” passed away this year.

That was folk musician Joyce Brookshire. She was a formidable force in the neighborhood, known for her songs about Atlanta, the South and the great North Georgia mountains.

Her life also mirrored the storied history of the Cabbagetown neighborhood.

Some of her talented friends are hosting a memorial concert in her honor Saturday.

“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with actress, playwright and professor Brenda Bynum, who starred in the oral history play “Cabbagetown 3 Women” that featured Brookshire’s music, along with musician John McCutcehon, who contributed to Brookshire’s albums along with being an admirer of her work.

The event, Songs and Stories celebrating the life of Joyce Brookshire, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Chosewood Hall. A celebratory potluck will end the night.
