On Monday, Georgia Chief Justice Harold Melton extended his statewide judicial emergency order to June 12.

The order calls on courts across the state to pause nonessential services to stop the spread of COVID-19.

But many housing and animal welfare advocates say evictions are still taking place.

Cole Thaler, the co-founder of Paws Between Homes, a newly established Atlanta nonprofit, says housing instability can have long-term effects on pet owners and their pets once the moratorium expires.

“Unfortunately, we are in a quiet moment before a tremendous storm — or really avalanche — of evictions in Georgia, and in Atlanta specifically,” said Thaler.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Thaler told the show’s host, Rose Scott, that his organization is working to help pet owners who are experiencing temporary loss of housing and eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the conversation, Thaler discussed the help that Paws Between Homes provides, which comes in the form of temporary foster homes for pets, veterinary care and supplies.

“One of the great things, I guess, silver linings maybe, in this pandemic, of this terrible pandemic is all of the people stepping up to help, to be helpers in this situation,” said Thaler.
