Local Police Chief Speaks on Floyd Case, Announces Anti-Racism Resolution

Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton and Smyrna Police Chief Joseph Bennett join “Closer Look” to discuss a newly-passed resolution that condemns racism.

After viewing the video of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, a local police chief says he’s unaware of any police training or policies that entail using the types of restraint that were used.

“I can say this, in 25 years of policing, I never been trained in that type of restraint,” said Smyrna Police Chief Joseph Bennett. “And furthermore, the policy of the Smyrna Police Department prohibits any type of neck hold.”

Bennett made the comments during an interview on Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look with Rose Scott.”

During the conversation, Bennett and Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton, also talked with host Scott, about a newly-passed resolution that affirms the City of Smyrna and all of its entities’ commitment to fighting all forms of racism,” WHEREAS, racism and hate have no place in our city and we are committed to working actively against all forms of racism. We are committed to safeguarding our community against the damages that racism causes and to ensuring that the Constitutional rights of every person who lives, works, and visits our great city are protected.”
