Looking Forward To 2016: Legislative Changes

As the new year approaches, we are asking the WABE news staff what topics they plan to watch in 2016.

Reporter Johnny Kauffman says he will be following discussions about bringing casino gambling to Georgia. Gov. Nathan Deal has signaled he does not support the idea, but some state legislators are all for it.

“The interesting thing here is that it would take a constitutional amendment, and that doesn’t need the governor’s signature on it,” Kauffman says. “But any sort of regulations afterwards would require the governor’s signature. So that could be a little bit more complicated.”

Newscast editor Lisa George says she has her eye on what the state legislature will do for neighborhoods forming new cities or getting annexed by existing ones.

“A state legislative study committee just came out with a set of recommendations on annexation and cityhood and how this process should make its way through the legislature in the future,” George says. “So that could very much change the way people wanting new cities or wanting to annex areas are going to go about their business if legislation is formulated and passed.”

Features editor Susanna Capelouto says she will have her eye on what the state legislature does this year on transportation:

“We’re going to really have to watch what they’re going to do with MARTA funding, transportation funding. We’re going to have the penny sales tax next year, probably on the ballot. Where that money goes is going to be important.”

WABE will be following these topics and more as the Georgia General Assembly convenes in January, plus other stories from the worlds of sports, transportation and housing.
