In some states, but not yet in Georgia, you can buy gas at a pump and play the lottery while you wait.

Duluth-based NCR is in Las Vegas this week at the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) convention, showing off its new “Play at the Pump” technology.

NCR is one of the largest consumer transaction companies in the U.S. It recently partnered with the inventors Atlanta-based Linq3.

Linq3 recently relocated its corporate headquarters to Atlanta from New York.

Matt Lavelle, chief operating officer of Linq3, says it’s a popular feature at the more than 450 gas stations in three states: California, North Carolina and Missouri. By the end of this month, it will be also be at gas stations in Pennsylvania.

He said partnering with NCR will help it get into more markets and major retailers.

“The transaction from end to end takes less than 18 seconds and it happens while you’re pumping gas,” Lavelle said. “We want to be mindful of not causing bigger lines at the gas pump.”

According to a 2012 report from NACS, 73 percent of convenience store patrons only buy gas and don’t enter the stores.

Players will receive a text message with the numbers they played and can receive notifications on their cellphone. If a player wins less than $600, the amount can be credited immediately to a player’s credit card.

Lavelle said he has had conversations with the Georgia Lottery Corporation, which said it was interested. But before it can be installed in Georgia, lottery games at the pump need to be approved by the state.
