Many Metro Atlanta Residents Under A Boil-Water Advisory

Many residents in the metro Atlanta area are being advised to boil their water Sunday before using it to cook, drink or brush their teeth.

A power outage shut down two pumping stations and triggered a temporary loss of pressure in the drinking water system after Saturday night’s storms, according to the city of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management.

“The storms that came through Saturday night were severe, and they actually took down two pumping stations. One, on the north side, was down for a short amount of time. The other was down for just about 45 minutes,” Department of Watershed Management spokeswoman Lillian Govus said.

The city of Atlanta issued a boil-water advisory until further notice. Customers should boil water for one minute past a rolling boil before use. They should also monitor news reports and follow Twitter updates @atlwatershed until further notice.

The advisory affects (but is not limited to) the following areas:

  • Areas served by the distribution system including Downtown Atlanta and Avon Avenue to the south, Holtzclaw Street to the east, and Joseph Lowery Boulevard to the west
  • The Fox Theatre
  • Cabbagetown
  • Edgewood
  • Old Fourth Ward
  • West End
  • Peoplestown
  • Reynoldstown
  • Mechanicsville
  • Summerhill
  • Edgewood
  • Avon Avenue
  • South Fulton County

According to the Watershed Department’s updates on Twitter, crews are flushing the system and sampling water in the affected zones to be sure there is no contamination and the Environmental Protection Department will advise the department when the boil-water advisory can be lifted.

“This is just an abundance of caution to make sure that nothing grew in that line. We flushed out the entire system since this happened to try to make sure that we continue to meet all of the standards and exceed them,” Govus said.
