MARTA Army Provides Meals To Furloughed Transit Workers During Pandemic

A local nonprofit is providing free meals to furloughed transit workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MARTA Army is a group of volunteers that is separate from the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

Audrey Parker and Saba Long, who serve on the MARTA Army board, say the nonprofit was established four years ago to enhance the ridership experience on public transit. But in an effort to help transit workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization recently partnered with World Central Kitchen.

The two organizations came together to launch Operation Feed an Operator.

Through the partnership, World Central Kitchen provides funding to Sweet Auburn Seafood to prepare 300 hot meals a day.

The meals are distributed Monday through Friday to furloughed paratransit workers, station agents, cleaning staff and bus operators.

Parker and Long joined “Closer Look” to discuss the need for volunteers to keep the operation going and the  potential long-term effects the COVID-19 pandemic could have on the transit industry.
