MARTA CEO Addresses Reducing Services, Declining Ridership Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

MARTA, Georgia’s largest transit system, is implementing some changes in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Starting this week, rail service is operating on a Sunday schedule starting at 5 a.m., while bus service is operating on “modified weekday schedules.”

Last week, officials with the transit agency also announced bus fares will be eliminated, for the time being, to reduce contact between bus riders and drivers. In addition, bus riders who do not use the vehicle’s accessibility ramp now exit from the back of the bus.

All of these changes are happening due to a decline in ridership, according to MARTA.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look with Rose Scott,” MARTA CEO and General Manager Jeffrey Parker joined host Rose Scott by phone for a conversation about these changes, and their potential long-term impact on public transit in Atlanta.
