Mayor Reed Comments on National Black Arts Festival Fundraising

Officials with the Atlanta based National Black Arts Festival say they’ve raised seven hundred thousand of their one million dollar goal for this season. Aleck Ragsdale spoke with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed over the weekend about what this festival means for the city.

The National Black Arts Festival has fallen on hard financial times in recent years. They’ve had to slash their programming budget and lay off staff, but Mayor Reed is confident the festival will reach its fundraising goals. He says he’s been a long-time supporter of the organization.

“I think we’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing. They’re close to reaching their goal because we’ve been supporting the National Black Arts Festival. It’s been a partnership and it’s not a new partnership. They’re going to achieve their goal because I’m going to support them and they’re gonna get there”.

Mayor Reed went on to say arts organizations like the National Black Arts Festival are an important part of what makes Atlanta an international city.

“We need to have a wide variety because our city is becoming more and more diverse every single day, and that’s really what the National Black Arts Festival contributes to the life of our city”.

This season’s National Black Arts Festival is going on now and ends in mid-September.
