In 1996 the Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month, to be observed every April. It’s a time when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate the art form and its place in American culture. Thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.
Our own Lois Reitzes sat down with poet Natasha Trethewey back in 2009 to talk about the place of poetry in our everyday lives. Trethewey won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for her collection entitled Native Guard. She was named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2012.
