The President and CEO of the National Urban League says the riot at the U.S Capitol was a planned orchestrated violent attack, and the people involved need to be prosecuted and held accountable for their actions.

“We need to understand what we are faced with that is an emboldened white supremacist hate movement that is bent on violence, said President Marc Morial on Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look.”

Roughly 24 hours before Morial’s conversation with show host Rose Scott, the United States House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection.”  The vote to impeach Trump was 232 to 197. Ten Republicans sided with the Democrats.

Earlier in the week before the House’s vote, Morial testified at a Congressional Black Caucus hearing about the attack at the U.S. Capitol. Morial also joined civil rights leader Al Sharpton to call on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Morial, who supports the Senate moving forward with an impeachment trial, says it’s shocking to see a president incite violence in an attempt to maintain power and that anyone involved in the insurrection is not fit to hold public office, “This is a long-term battle for the soul, the future, the equilibrium of America.”

Morial reflected on the historical events, police violence and suggested ways he feels Congress and the Republican Party should address America’s current racial and political climate. He also shared how the National Urban League plans to help bring the country together under the Biden-Harris administration.

“I’m far more focused on the need for there to be a coalition of people regardless of political persuasion or race, or region in the country that wants to support a move to restore this nation, to rebuild this nation’s economy, to make progress in racial justice and to move this nation beyond the muck we’ve been living in for the last four years,” Morial explained.
