New GDOT Chief Hopes To Be A Resource To Lawmakers During Funding Debate

Georgia has a new transportation chief. It comes just days after the department’s current chief unexpectedly announced his retirement.

Board members of the Georgia Department of Transportation voted Monday for Russell McCurry to replace outgoing director, Keith Golden.

McCurry is currently GDOT’s planning director and has been with the agency for more than 20 years. He takes over at a critical juncture.

State lawmakers are debating whether to raise taxes to put GDOT on more stable financial ground. Experts say the department needs at least a billion dollars more per year to maintain Georgia’s existing network of roads and bridges.

McCurry says he’s ready to work with lawmakers.

“GDOT, myself we’ll be here ready to still answer questions…to try to help people understand what the sources of funds are, where they’re used, how they’re used, and what could be changed if there was additional  levels of funding,” said McCurry. “I think the case has been made – a strong case thus far – of what the conditions are and what needs to be done.”

McCurry replaces Keith Golden, who will stay on in an advisory role until the end of the month. Golden has been chief of GDOT since 2011. Many were surprised by his retirement announcement, but Golden says he’s been considering it since last year, when he hit the 30-year mark at the department. As for the timing, Golden figured it would be better to retire early this legislative session given the ongoing debate over funding.

“I did not want the double-edged sword where we get through the end of session then I retire and people speculate or question my motives for doing it,” said Golden.

He’s confident GDOT has made a strong case to lawmakers about the need for additional funding. He says it’s up to them now to act.
