New Voices Coming to WABE

Weekly Radio Show Hosted by Atlanta Dream Co-Owner Renee Montgomery Among Four New Series Coming to WABE Summer 2023

Atlanta (August 1, 2023) — WABE, Atlanta’s choice for NPR and PBS, continues to strengthen its investment in local journalism and amplifying Atlanta’s creative voices. This summer, under its WABE Studios banner, the 90%-community-funded station is rolling out a slate of four new original programs and shows. 

Renee Montgomery, WNBA champion and part-owner of the Atlanta Dream, is bringing her acclaimed weekly talk show, Montgomery & Co, to the WABE 90.1 radio lineup Saturdays, beginning August 12. Also this summer, WABE Studios is adding three new podcasts — The Boom, Calls for Justice, and Wake Up and Createto its podcast network and premiering three Season 4 bonus episodes of the Peabody Award-winning podcast Buried Truths

The Boom is hosted by Atlanta native Jewel Wicker, an award-winning journalist whose profiles have run in GQ, Billboard, NBC News, The New York Times and Teen Vogue, where she served as interim managing editor. Podcast fans will recognize Wicker from her AMBIE and Webby award-winning turn as  co-host and writer on the Crooked Media/Tenderfoot TV podcast “Gaining Ground: The New Georgia.”

Join WNBA star and community activist Renee Montgomery, her mother Bertlela Montgomery, her sister Nicole Young and her wife Sirena Grace each Saturday on WABE 90.1 for an insightful and compelling, one-of-a-kind talk show that combines interviews and culture conversations with some of the world’s top innovators and entrepreneurs with a splash of lighthearted family fun.

In its fourth season, the Peabody Award-winning podcast Buried Truths investigates the 1958 police beating and death of James Brazier — a young Black father — in Terrell County, Georgia. In these previously unreleased bonus episodes, hear from Brazier’s daughters and  Kelley Stinson, granddaughter of the police officer who killed him. Additionally, singer/songwriter and scholar of the South Carolina Herring discusses the song she created for Buried Truths. Journalist, professor and Pulitzer-prize-winning author Hank Klibanoff hosts the podcast.

The Boom is a weekly look at Atlanta’s growing film and television industry, through trending topics and origin stories of local filmmakers, cast, and crew. Entertainment and culture reporter Jewel Wicker hosts.

As part of Science Gallery’s JUSTICE exhibition, an interrogation of justice in media through democratized voice and ownership: each episode is constructed from contributors who leave reflections on justice using a phone booth installed in Science Gallery. Those who contribute to the podcast share ownership of the show, re-exploring the intent of public media and disrupting traditional podcast frameworks.

  • WAKE UP AND CREATE
