North Georgia Could See Some Snow This Weekend

Residents in the northern half of the state could see some snow.

“They could see some accumulation of snow going into Friday night and ending during the day on Saturday,” said Kent McMullen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, in Peachtree City. “Still it’s too early to tell how much.”

Metro Atlanta may only get a dusting, or possibly no snow at all, but temperatures are expected to be below freezing.

“High temperatures on Friday is looking like only around 40 degrees.  The low Friday night in the upper 20’s,” said McMullen.

McMullen says a slow moving warming trend will follow, and it could take about five days to get back to seasonal weather.

Inclement weather could lead to dangerous driving conditions.

“The city of Atlanta is in ‘readiness mode,’ which is ensuring that our equipment is where it needs to be; that our levels of materials are where they need to be,” said Ria Aiken, the director of Emergency Preparedness for the City of Atlanta.

Fulton County is also prepared.

“We have full coverage of all of our staff, starting on Friday, working through Sunday right now, which we may extend further if the weather dictates it,” said David Clark, who heads Public Works for Fulton County. “So there always will be several crews out on the roads.”

According to the Southeast Regional Climate Center, Atlanta averages less than 2 1/2 inches of snow per year.
