November Was Cold, But That Doesn’t Predict A Bad Winter

Last month was the fourth coldest November in Georgia on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. But there were also some unusually warm temperatures. Nov. 24 was the hottest on record in Atlanta, at 76 degrees.

“Anything is fair game for November,” said Bill Murphey, the state climatologist for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Though there had been predictions for this to be a bad winter, a cold November isn’t a sign of things to come.

“I don’t think we’re going to see the drastic ice storms that we saw last winter,” he said.

Plus, the El Niño that scientists were predicting, which would have sent a lot of cold and wet our way is now looking less impressive.

“So that’s not going to be playing so much into our winter weather pattern,” said Laura Berlanger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. With a weak El Niño, what will happen this winter is harder predict.

“It’s going to be an uncertain one, that’s for sure,” she said.

For the foreseeable future, though, the cold weather that came in this weekend is going to stick around.

“Forget what we had, say, four or five days ago,” said Murphey, “When you were like 60 degrees and you were putting on your shorts and saying this is real nice.”
