The Labor Day weekend combined with the impending arrival of Hurricane Dorian could snarl travel across the southeast.

That means Georgia officials are preparing for bad weather and bad traffic.

Forecasters say Dorian could bring storm surge and higher waves to coastal Georgia this weekend and heavy rain to the south and central parts of the state beginning late Sunday or early Monday.

“The good thing about the storm slowing is it gives us more time to prepare,” said Gov. Brian Kemp at a briefing Thursday afternoon. “The bad thing, is it continues to build the intensity of the storm, which we’ve now seen it’s projected to be a Category 4 hurricane.”

Kemp says Georgia could also see traffic headaches if evacuations are ordered in Florida.

“That’s something else I think as citizens we need to be thinking about if we get a big traffic flow from Florida, it’s going to disrupt traffic for our Georgians that our traveling over the holiday weekend,” said Kemp.

The governor encourages everyone with weekend plans along the Georgia coast to keep a close eye on the weather.

The state activated its Emergency Operations Center on Thursday, an effort to make communications easier among government agencies such as the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management, Department of Insurance and the governor’s office among others.
