‘Perfect Arrangement’ Brings Story Of Lavender Scare To Theatrical Outfit

Bob and Norma look like any other happily married couple working at the State Department in 1950s Washington D.C. But their home life is anything but conventional. Atlanta playwright Topher Payne won the American Theatre Critics Association’s Osborn Prize for the show shortly before it received an off-Broadway production in 2015. Now, it’s coming home to Theatrical Outfit.
The play draws on the Lavender scare, a campaign by the federal government to identify and fire all employees suspected of being homosexual. Bob and Norma are both closeted and have married each other’s partners as cover, and the four live in a Georgetown duplex connected by a closet.
This production, directed by Adam Koplan, is the 19th staging of the show since its initial development at the Process Theatre in 2009.
