Closer Look: Atlanta’s Farm Burger; How Eunice Carter Took Down a Notorious Mob Boss

Tuesday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:

• 0:00: Rose gives a news brief on a ruling issued late yesterday by U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg, which says that the Georgia Secretary of State’s office must set up a way for voters to check if their provisional ballots were counted, through tools such as a hotline or website. Counties with lots of provisional ballots must review the eligibility of voters who had to cast those ballots because of registration issues. The order allows the Secretary of State’s office to conduct its own review of those voters. The ruling also says Georgia must not certify the election results before 5 p.m. Friday.
• In other news, Georgia lawmakers are gathering today for a special session. On the agenda: economic recovery for those communities hit hardest by Hurricane Michael last month. Lawmakers will look to approve funding for recovery efforts for parts of south Georgia. Also up for discussion under the Gold Dome is a sales tax break for jet fuel. This past summer Governor Deal suspended the state’s taxes on jet fuel through an executive order. Now he wants the legislature to turn that into law.
• 2:32: The granddaughter of slaves, Eunice Carter became New York’s first African-American assistant district attorney. She also took down notorious mafia boss Charles “Lucky” Luciano — but little has been known about her, until now. Her grandson and Yale University law professor Stephen Carter shares her story in his new book, “Invisible: The Forgotten Story of the Black Woman Lawyer Who Took Down America’s Most Powerful Mobster.” Carter joins us in the studio.
• 31:48: Building a community of ranchers, farmers, chefs, and eaters — around a burger place. We hear about how Decatur, Georgia-based Farm Burger about how the business got its start. We speak with co-founders Jason Mann and George Frangos.
