Closer Look: “Black Metropolis” Exhibit of Comic Book Artist Tim Fielder’s Work; Stockbridge Mayor Anthony Ford

Wednesday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:

  • 0:00: Rose gives a news brief about how the Secret Service reported today that two suspicious packages were intercepted before reaching former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Former President Barack Obama. In a statement to NPR, the Secret Service said: “The protectees [Clinton and Obama] did not receive the packages nor were they at risk of receiving them.” Since that announcement was made, CNN has evacuated its New York office due to a suspicious package in its mailroom. And earlier in the week, an explosive device was also found at the home of billionaire and Democratic donor George Soros on Monday. It’s currently unclear if these incidents are related, but federal and local authorities are investigating.
  • 2:28: There are multiple lawsuits that have been filed against state and county elections officials. One such lawsuit was filed last week on behalf of five Georgia voters against Secretary of State Brian Kemp, Georgia’s State Election Board members and members of the Gwinnett County Board of Elections. That lawsuit claims “excessive rejection” of mail ballots due to innocent errors and discrepancies on mail-in ballot paperwork. The Secretary of State’s office issued a statement that reads, in part, “Our office has opened an investigation on behalf of the State Election Board to ensure that counties are following the law in making these determinations.” We speak with Bruce Brown, an Atlanta attorney who is representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
  • 11:24: A federal judge has declined to stop a referendum that allows voters to decide on the creation of the proposed city of Eagle’s Landing. But legal efforts for the city of Stockbridge continue. We get the latest from Stockbridge Mayor Anthony S. Ford.

  • 39:15: Researchers from the University of Georgia’s College of Public Health are tracking the nation’s crisis pregnancy centers, and putting their findings into an online database. We speak with Andrea Swartzendruber, assistant professor in the College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, about the numbers and what they mean for the nation and Georgia.
