Closer Look: Defining Racial Bias Training; Unemployment and Jobs Outlook in Ga.; And More
May 29, 2018
Tuesday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:
- 0:00: Rose gives a news brief about a flash flood watch that is in effect for most of the state, including the Atlanta area. Subtropical Storm Alberto has been downgraded, but heavy rains are still in the forecast. The list of counties under a flood watch is long and includes Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Gainesville, Hall, and North and South Fulton counties. The flash flood warning will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
- And some news related to Tropical Storm Alberto, out of Polk County, North Carolina: from television station WYFF, news anchor Mike McCormick and news photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer died Monday when a tree fell on their SUV. The accident happened on Highway 176 in Polk County while the two were covering the impact of heavy rain in that area.
- 2:40: Today across the nation, Starbucks will close for a few hours to give racial bias training to all employees. We’ll speak about this with Stephen Paskoff, the founder of ELI® and the company’s hallmark Civil Treatment® learning solutions.
- 22:51: Following a number of Georgia voter center data breaches last year, Secretary of State Brian Kemp pushed legislation to move toward a paper ballot voting system. That bill did not pass the Legislature. Now Kemp has created a new commission to research, review, and potentially update the state’s voting system. We learn more from State Rep. Barry Fleming, who co-chairs the committee.
- 37:10: The national unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since 2000. In April, U.S. unemployment figures fell to 3.9 percent, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 164,000 jobs were added last month. Some of the top industries adding new jobs? Business services, manufacturing and health care. So what does all this mean for folks here in Georgia, where unemployment sits at 4.3 percent? And what is the jobs outlook for recent graduates? Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler joins us in studio.
