Closer Look: Drew Charter School Boys Varsity Golf Team Makes APS History; Energy Burden on ATL’s Low Income Communities; Popularity Of ‘Impossible Burger’ Leads To National Shortage

  • 0:00: A 2018 study by the Georgia Institute of Technology found that Atlanta ranks 4th in the nation for the highest “median energy burden,” or the percentage of income a household spends on energy bills.  The burden is even greater for low-income communities. What can be done to reduce the energy burden for these communities? We’ll ask Dr. Joyce Dorsey, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority and Nathaniel Smith, Chief Equity Officer for the Partnership for Southern Equity.

  • 27:50: The producer of the plant-based Impossible Burger has seen a significant success this year. The company recently signed a deal with the fast food giant Burger King. However, this success has resulted in an unexpected challenge: a nationwide shortage of Impossible Burgers. It’s a dilemma Emory University Goizueta School of Business Professor Peter Topping calls the ‘paradox of success.’ We’ll hear how the shortage has impacted a local business, Grindhouse Killer Burgers, and how Impossible Foods hopes to address this problem.

  • 38:30: The Drew Charter School Boys varsity Golf Team recently walked away with the Georgia Class A Championship. They are the first Atlanta Public school to do so.  We learn more about the historic victory from Jeff Dunovant, coach of the Drew Golf Team, and two recent Drew graduates Solomon Dobbs and Christopher McCrary.
