Closer Look: Music Mogul Jermaine Dupri Talks Over 25 Years In Music; Meet The Business Owners At SW ATL’s The MET

0:00: Rose gives a news brief on an executive order issued from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms today that the Department of City Planning will no longer issue any new e-scooter permits. The order will NOT affect companies with existing permits, but the Mayor will introduce more legislation at the August 5 City Council meeting. This executive order comes a day after protestors gathered yesterday on West Peachtree, near 15th street. The group gathered to honor 37-year old William Alexander who was struck by a Cobb transit link bus last week — Alexander was reportedly riding an e-scooter. An investigation continues as to how the fatal accident occurred. The crowd of dozens formed a ‘human chain’ to create a separate lane for walkers, bikers and scooter riders. Many of the protestors called on the city to prioritize ‘complete streets’ for bikers, scooter riders, and motorists.
2:06: Jermaine Dupri, the founder of So So Def Recordings, has produced hit records for artists like Usher, Bow Wow and Mariah Carey. Now, the Atlanta-based music mogul’s own rise to fame has been chronicled in a new hour-long documentary, “Power, Influence and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def.” He sat down with Closer Look host Rose Scott yesterday, in front of a small audience, for a conversation about his more than two decades in the music industry and what’s next for his career.
32:25: The Atlanta-based development firm Carter purchased a historic 1.1 million square foot property, that is now known as The MET, just over a year ago. The development, located in Southwest Atlanta, is considered a haven for sculptors, prop makers, furniture makers, and other creators. Earlier this week, we heard learned about the history of the property, as well as the developer’s vision for its future. Today, we hear part two of that conversation, and meet some more of the creatives who call The MET home, including Molly Coffee from Zombie Cat Productions, Jeannette Katz, co-owner of La Bodega and the property’s longest residing tenant, sculptor Curtis Patterson.
