Closer Look: Norcross Families Rely on Extended Stay Motels; Billboard Campaign Aims To Combat Sex Trafficking

- 0:00: Rose gives a news brief on the Atlanta City Council approving a resolution, yesterday, opposing House Bill 481, also known as the so-called “heartbeat bill”, which Governor Kemp signed into law earlier this month. The City Council unanimously approved the resolution, which comes after multiple, local district attorneys said they will not, or can not, prosecute those who have abortions under the new law.
- In other news, former DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton was arrested by the FBI in her home, this morning, on federal charges including two counts of extortion and one count of bribery, according to a federal indictment. Sutton is accused of soliciting, demanding and accepting cash from a contractor, related to the construction of The Snapfinger Creek Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility. Her arraignment was this morning before Magistrate Judge Russell G. Vineyard.
- 4:01: In the fall of 2018, the city of Norcross surveyed the residents of nine extended-stay motels, to learn what barriers they face in finding permanent, affordable housing — the data was collected as part of the LiveNorcross initiative. A conversation on the report’s findings, out today, with Lejla Prljaca, executive director of the Gwinnett Housing Corporation, Kathleen Allen, a Norcross resident and an author of the study Andrew Hixson, Norcross Mayor Pro Tem.
- 36:37: The International Human Trafficking Institute, (IHTI) an initiative of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, has launched a new billboard campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the “Truth in Trafficking.” The digital billboards will be on display until June 16th in 23 locations around metro Atlanta. We learn more about the campaign, and the organization’s goal to eradicate child and sex trafficking, from Deborah Richardson, Executive Director of the IHTI and Dekalb County, Senior Assistant District Attorney Destiny H. Bryan of the Appellate Division
