The Atlanta-based business King of Pops has been selling their popsicles on the Decatur Square for years now.

However, earlier this year, the city of Decatur rejected the company’s request to sell on the square for another year. The city did give selling privileges to another company, Birmingham-based Steel City Pops, according to local news outlet Decaturish.

Dan Whisenhunt, editor and publisher of Decaturish, joined WABE’s “Closer Look” to discuss his three-part investigative series, “Dethroned.” It explores what happened between these businesses and the local city government.

“This is the problem: when you don’t codify this stuff into law, you open yourself up to these kinds of questions,” Whisenhunt said.

Decatur’s City Manager Andrea Arnold said in a statement that the city is, ” vibrant downtown district and recruiting and supporting businesses to invest in and become part of our community.”

“Closer Look” also reached out to Steel City Pops and King of Pops, but did not receive a response.
