Preview: Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival 2019

The intersection between photography, activism, and self-reflection are on full display at this year’s Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival.

The festival showcases hundreds of free events and exhibits from a diverse and expansive group of photographers. REM vocalist Michael Stipe and Atlanta photographer Kate T. Parker are two prominent artists who will be headlining this year’s festival.

ACP board president, Mary Stanley, spoke with “City Lights” about the festivities.

A Few Highlights: 

  • Kate T. Parker: Thursday, Oct. 17 at Facet Gallery, 7 p.m.- She is not only a portrait and commercial photographer, but also a mother, wife and Ironman. Her “Strong is the New Pretty” wanted to present females in an authentic manner showing their confidence, silliness, messiness, and loud personalities.
  • Public Art: “The Fence” – Oct. 8 through June 3, 2020 – Atlanta Beltline’s Westside Trail Located along the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Beltline Overpass, with Beltline on ramps at Stafford and Jasper streets. This is exhibit is the largest photo exhibition in North America, the FENCE features more than 40 photographers from around the world.
  • Special Exhibit: “Teen Spirit” – now through Oct. 11 at Mason Fine Art Entering its 8th year. The impact of ACP’s collaborative program with inpatient teens at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Scottish Rite and Egleston hospitals has superseded expectations. Hundreds of teens each year to explore their identity, including (or in spite of) their diagnosis, through writing and photographic self-portraiture.
  • “Photo Battle!”:  Friday, Oct. 18 Reception at 7 p.m., Photo battle at 8 p.m. at Ambient+Studio. Enjoy memorable matchups as local photographers engage in photo-based fisticuffs. Contestants armed with their best images on thumb drives will angle for the audience’s applause to make it to the next round in this slideshow vs. slideshow competition.

Festivities are being held throughout Atlanta through Nov. 7. This evening at 7 p.m., Lois Reitzes will speak with Michael Stipe, of REM fame. Music and photography have equal importance in his life and he will discuss his new book “Our Interference Times” at SCADShow in Midtown.
