Proposed Age Requirement For Airport Taxis Upsets Drivers

Some taxi drivers are unhappy with a proposed age requirement for cabs serving Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

All taxis would have to be no more than seven years old to pick up passengers.

Driver representative Stephen Belcher said that would create a financial burden for those behind the wheel.

“The emphasis should not be on the age of the car, but the quality of the driver,” said Belcher, “and this is what passengers want.”

Belcher spoke out against the proposal Wednesday before the Atlanta City Council’s Transportation Committee.

Airport spokesperson Reese McCranie said the rule is needed to give a good impression of the city.

He estimates the rule would affect 60 percent of taxi cabs serving the airport.
