Proposed City Of Stonecrest Referendum Passes Georgia House

The Georgia House passed a measure Wednesday that would allow voters to create Stonecrest, a new city in southeast DeKalb County, through a referendum.

Supporters have been trying for the last three years to let residents vote on becoming their own city of about 50,000 residents near the city of Lithonia.

The proposal still needs final approval in the Senate to move forward. If approved, voters will get to decide on the city in a referendum later this year.

The General Assembly is considering another proposal for incorporation in DeKalb County – the city of Greenhaven, which, if approved, would be the second largest city in the state of Georgia.

Last year, the Legislature approved bills that allowed voters to decide on two other new cities in DeKalb County: Tucker and LaVista Hills. Voters then approved the city of Tucker but narrowly rejected creating LaVista Hills.
