Report: Second Georgia ICE Detainee Dies In As Many Days

For the second time in two days, a detainee being held by federal immigration authorities in Georgia has died, according to a published report.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that that Babubhai Patel, 58, an Indian national, died Tuesday at Grady Memorial Hospital, with the preliminary cause of death complications due to heart failure.
According to the AJC report, Patel had been held at the Atlanta City Detention Center by the U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement Agency (ICE) after arriving at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport from South America on May 10 without necessary immigration paperwork. Patel reportedly was taken to Grady on Saturday after a medical screening revealed high blood pressure.
On Monday, Jean Jimenez-Joseph, 27, a Panamanian man being held at the ICE facility in Lumpkin, in southwest Georgia, was found dead of an apparent suicide, after being placed in solitary confinement for 19 days.
Jimenez-Joseph had been in ICE custody since March, when he was detained in North Carolina after being convicted of larceny.
Patel’s death comes a little more than a week after Project South, an Atlanta advocacy group, released a report claiming substandard medical care at two Georgia immigrant detention centers.
