Retired NBA Player Turns Home Into Artist Residency Program
While Joe Barry Carroll made a name for himself on the basketball court, he is now off the court and rebounded into in wealth management, philanthropy and the arts.
An artist himself, Carroll recently opened his home to seven artist for a four-week residency program, called the Carroll House. The artists from Germany, the United States, the Bahamas and Venezuela each had their own unit inside the house and access to the surrounding property to create their art.
“Well, I’m an artist, and I’ve got 50 acres of wood with a pond and things like that, and it worked for me to create my art,” said Carroll when asked about deciding to open up his house to artists.
During the program, Carroll hosted salons, inviting the Atlanta arts community to gather and see the artists’ works. The artists also went on weekly field trips to attractions around the city and cooked meals together.
For the most part, though, they worked.
“I tease them that they’ve confused me because I’ll expect this from everybody that comes, and certainly my luck wouldn’t be that good,” said Carroll. “I will really miss them. They tickle me because I had all these rules, everyone needs to find their own transportation, and here I am, just running errands for them.”
Carroll plans on hosting round two of the residency program in concurrence with the Decatur Book Festival. This time, writers will make their way to the Carroll House.
