SC Flag Protester Sparks Conversation About Activism

Bree Newsome never considered herself a political activist until recently.

A filmmaker and artist, Newsome earned national attention by removing the Confederate flag flying over the South Carolina Capitol this summer.

She said she was initially prompted to action by the 2012 death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin and also has been arrested in her native North Carolina while protesting for voting rights.

Newsome’s newfound awareness is part of a larger discussion taking place about modern-day political and social activism and illustrated most prominently around racial issues, including the Martin case.

Newsome, who faces a November court date in Columbia for her flag protest, was invited to speak at Agnes Scott College this week.

On “Closer Look,” she and Agnes Scott president Elizabeth Kiss discussed student activism in particular and the Decatur school’s new initiative to encourage students “to be a change agent in a global society.”
