At this point, we all know that Georgia has a growing film industry. Maybe you’ve seen Helen Mirren exiting a restaurant or stumbled across the cast of “Stranger Things” in the woods. Productions are hiring more and more people based in the South.

But Georgians are still trying to find a way to dominate all aspects of the filmmaking process. The Savannah College of Art and Design recently launched a program called SCADFILM to do just that.

“We really want to help develop a grassroots pool of filmmaking talent who aren’t just crewing and proving support services to productions but instead initiating productions of their own and creating original content,” said SCADFILM’s director Brandon Ostermann in an interview with Lois Reitzes.

The goal of the initiative is to to put more Atlantans in creative roles like director, producer, director of photography and screenwriter. SCADFILM offers film screenings, lectures, workshops and master classes that allow participants to grow their skill base and network with other professionals. Recently, they hosted a screening of “The Goonies” with director Richard Donner, and coming up next weekend, screenwriter Kim Krizan will host a four day masterclass.

Osterman is also a filmmaker, as is SCADFILM’s Industry and Community Outreach Manager Brantly Watts.

“All of us as filmmakers are learning through [working at SCADFILM].” Watts said. “We’re getting access to some really great programming, and we’re getting educational opportunities that I haven’t had before.”
