The cult classic ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ was released in 1999. But screenwriter Karen McCullah said she started writing the script in 1997.

“I started writing it on a beach … with a bucket of Corona next to me,” she laughed. McCullah said she and her writing partner, Kirstin Smith, approach writing like they’re on a vacation because that’s how they started. And if it worked once, why not keep writing that way.

In McCullah’s interview with ‘City Lights’ producer Myke John while she was in town for a screening at SCAD, McCullah also gives a nod to Heath Ledger, talks about how she got into the business and broke down a bit of her writing process.

McCullah has also written “She’s the Man,” “House Bunny,” “Ella Enchanted,” “The Ugly Truth,” and “Legally Blonde.”

In fact, she and Smith signed on earlier this year to bring the blonde, feminist bombshell back for “Legally Blonde 3,” which is set to hit theaters in 2020.
