Georgia Democrat and U.S. Senator-elect Raphael Warnock has won one of Georgia’s two Senate runoff elections.

This makes Warnock the first Black Senator in Georgia’s history and puts the Senate majority within the Democratic party’s reach.

Warnock spoke to WABE’s “Morning Edition” host Lisa Rayam about his pride and honor to work for all Georgians whether they voted for him or not, citing his personal experience with the American dream.

His mother, he said, used to pick “somebody else’s cotton” as a teenager.

The Associated Press declared Warnock the winner early Wednesday morning.

Warnock’s edge is likely to grow as more ballots are counted, many of which were in Democratic-leaning areas.
