Stadium Area Councilman Argues There’s Still Time for a Deal Between Churches, State

Atlanta City Council

On Thursday, August 1st, state officials said they were giving up on talks with Mount Vernon Baptist Church about a deal to buy the church property.  Mount Vernon is one of two churches that occupy the site on the south side of the current Georgia Dome preferred by the Atlanta Falcons for the location of their new stadium (Friendship Baptist Church is the other).

The breakdown of the talks with Mt. Vernon means the state and the Falcons will now shift their attention to a site just north of the Dome.  But neighborhood groups strongly oppose a stadium on the north site.  Ivory Young is the Atlanta City Councilman who represents the neighborhoods near the proposed stadium site.  In a conversation with WABE’s Denis O’Hayer, Young argued there’s still time for the parties to come together on a deal for the south site, and said he’ll strongly oppose construction on the north site.
