Some teachers in the DeKalb County School District have lost their teaching certificates for ethics violations that the school system failed to report to the state.

Now, officials are investigating why DeKalb failed to report those violations committed by at least 15 employees. Not all of the educators being investigated have lost their certificates, though.

WABE spoke with Marlon Walker, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who broke this story. Walker is an education reporter for the AJC who covers DeKalb schools.

In this interview, Walker talks about why the Georgia Professional Standards Commission is investigating the DeKalb schools and former Superintendent Stephen Green.

Walker’s reporting uncovered abusive and illegal acts committed by some teachers that went unreported to the state. He also found the school district’s hiring practices lacked basic functions, such as conducting web searches and checking references for teaching applicants.
