State To Open Application Process for New Pre-K Providers

Some Georgia parents trying to get their children into state-funded pre-kindergarten programs are finding there is no room. But depending on where you live, there could be help on the way.Broadcast Version

Following the City of Decatur’s lottery last week, more than 70 children ended up on the waiting list to get into pre-K this fall.

Susan Adams is Assistant Commissioner for Georgia’s lottery-funded pre-K program. She says the state will open the application process March 31 for childcare programs and local school systems that want to start new classes. “There will be a list of targeted counties,” says Adams. “And those are counties where we’re actively seeking additional funding, we know that there are large waiting lists there, or are serving a lower percentage of the four-year-olds in that county.”

Adams says, statewide, the pre-K waiting list stands at about 6,000 with the majority of those waiting in metro Atlanta.

By the time school starts, she anticipates there will up to 100 new pre-K classes around the state.
