Oct. 29 is World Stroke Day, a day to raise awareness of the condition and to underscore high stroke rates. Close to 800,000 Americans have a stroke per year, with one in six of those occurrences resulting in a fatality.

At StoryCorps Atlanta, Les Garber describes to his wife, June, the shadowy initial details of the day he suffered a stroke almost 8 years ago and how he is coping with his new-found incapacitation.
