The Facts About the Vote to Defund NPR & PBS

Is federal funding for public media going away?

Yes, on July 17 the Senate approved the Trump Administration’s $9 billion rescission package aimed at clawing back money already allocated for public radio and television. This has also been approved by the House of Representatives.

What do funding cuts mean for WABE?

Congress has voted to defund public media entirely and immediately, cutting $1.9 million in support for WABE this year, and $4 million over the next two years. This immediate defunding of 13% of WABE’s budget harms our ability to operate and keep bringing Atlanta local news, arts and culture coverage and original programming, and the educational services we provide across 34 counties in Georgia and to over 1 million people per month. Our mission remains unchanged – we are here to inform, inspire, reflect and empower the Atlanta region. We’ve been 87% funded by this local community, and now we are asking for 100% of our funding from Atlanta – WABE is powered by Atlanta. Help us close the gap.
