Chick Wallace, a band with a self-described “salty girl pop” sound, joined Closer Look with Rose Scott in studio today for the program’s Summer Indie Music series.

“As a femme person, I think a lot of times if you have super raw, emotional music you’ll kind of get boxed into like a ‘sad girl’ or a hyper-emotional female box. And I kind of wanted to reject that,” said vocalist and rhythm guitar player Melanie Paulos.

Paulos has been playing music since the age of 12 years old and is also a visual artist.

The band fully came together, with its current members, more than a year ago.

Lead guitarist Tim Sherrill said he joined the band after meeting them while interning at a recording studio. He decided to join the band after taking a break from music

“Maybe two hours after Chick Wallace left [the studio] and did their thing I realized oh, I haven’t been in a band in so long. Maybe this a cool way to get back into it,” said Sherrill.

Since forming, the members of Chick Wallace have watched their fan base grow at venues like 529.

“EAV is definitely our little hub,” said drummer Ryan York.

When asked if they’ve seen the neighborhood change, York responded, “I think the grit of the neighborhood is still there, whether people want it to be or not, so hopefully that sticks around a little.”

As for Chick Wallace’s future, Paulos said the band members are working to complete their first full-length record.

“Any artist, you’re all working a day job to do the thing that you love, to fund the thing that you love and then, when does it start to all even out?” said Paulos. “That’s what I want is for it to all even out.”

Chick Wallace will perform at 529 on Sept. 18. You can listen to more of their music here.
