One of the largest free jazz festivals in the nation is coming back to Piedmont Park. The 42nd annual Atlanta Jazz Festival will kick off this Memorial Day weekend.

During the entire month of May, more than 100 jazz performers showcased their talents in venues throughout the metro area before coming together this weekend. City Lights’ host Lois Reitzes sat down with the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Camille Russel Love and up-and-coming jazz singer/songwriter Brenda Nichole Moorer to discuss the festivities.

Moorer performed at the “Live from Woodruff” Wednesday concert series on May 15. She is currently working on her first jazz album, which is set to release this fall.

“It [the record] is a collection of Millennial jazz artists and we love jazz just as much as all the other generations. I have about twenty-five Millennial jazz performers coming together to do this record,” said Moorer.

In response to what Moorer said about her love for jazz and being inspired by the festival, Love replied “Lois, see what happens when you have a free Jazz festival for years. You have young people who see people like them performing and voila! You have a young lady doing her first album.”

The festival runs through Sunday evening.
