Georgia’s chapter of the American Red Cross says giving blood right now is more important than in years past as the state struggles with elevated COVID-19 cases and deaths.

Officials with the American Red Cross of Georgia say they’re accustomed to lower blood donations this time of year, particularly as the winter weather settles in.

However, the coronavirus pandemic and an increase in the need for blood present additional challenges for the Red Cross as it maintains an adequate emergency department and patient blood supply.

Officials say there are thousands of people across Georgia who depend on healthy blood donations.

All donated blood goes through a battery of screening tests, then the blood and platelet blood is given to area hospitals for blood transfusion and surgeries.
